About
Dr. Johnson
Dr. Johnson earned her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1986 and was then awarded an internship in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at Penn’s New Bolton Center. After completing this internship, she worked at Almahurst Farms, a prominent Standardbred breeding farm, before establishing her own practice.
Her early career included racetrack work at Pompano Park in Florida and Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania, as well as a performance horse division in both states.
In 1992, Dr. Johnson chose to focus exclusively on performance horses and established a full-time practice in Wellington, FL. She developed a specialized practice dedicated to maintaining the peak performance of upper-level hunters, jumpers, and dressage horses.
Dr. Johnson has had a lifelong passion for horses, starting to ride at the age of 4. She was an active competitor in the hunter rings for many years along the East Coast, enjoying numerous successful seasons in the amateur-owner hunter ring at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL.
Dr. Johnson has also competed in the jumper ring, progressing from the adult jumpers to the high amateur-owner jumpers, competing in Florida, Colorado, New Zealand, and California.
The story of Oakhill Equine
In 2004, Dr. Johnson relocated to Calabasas, CA, and founded Oakhill Shockwave, bringing advanced shockwave therapy to the animals of Southern California. Driven to offer more, she completed 210 hours of postgraduate training in animal chiropractic at Options for Animals in Wellsville, KS. This rigorous program included in-depth lectures and extensive hands-on training, focusing on the unique chiropractic needs of horses and dogs. In 2009, after passing practical, clinical competency, and written exams, she became certified through the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association, broadening her practice into Oakhill Shockwave and Veterinary Chiropractic.
Continuing to advance her expertise, Dr. Johnson began additional training in 2024 with the Animal Rehab Institute in Loxahatchee, FL, pursuing certification as a Certified Equine Rehabilitation Therapist. This division of the practice, set to fully launch in early 2025, will introduce advanced rehabilitation techniques for injury recovery and prevention, including core strengthening exercises to reduce the risk of re-injury.
Now rebranded as Oakhill Equine, the practice offers a comprehensive approach to equine mobility, blending shockwave therapy, chiropractic care, and rehabilitation to support equine athletes at every stage of their journey.
