Equine Shockwave Therapy on horse

Equine Shockwave Therapy

The average treatment for one area typically ranges from $380 to $570, with some treatments potentially costing more. The charges for sedation (if needed) and the ranch call fee are additional.

  • Each shockwave treatment is customized to your horse's specific needs. Dr. Johnson collaborates with your regular veterinarian, after he or she has completed a thorough physical exam and soundness evaluation. This exam may be supplemented with additional diagnostics such as x-rays, ultrasound, bone scans, MRI, CT, and PET scans to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Once the diagnosis is made, a tailored therapeutic plan is developed. The optimal energy level and number of shockwaves for the specific injury are determined, and a treatment schedule is created. Generally, horses benefit most from a series of three treatments spaced two to three weeks apart, ensuring the best possible outcome for your horse's recovery.

  • The cost of each shockwave therapy session is based on the number of impulses used. Treatments usually range from 1,000 to 1,500 impulses per site, with each impulse costing 38 cents up to the first 1500 impulses. Any additional impulses (over 1500) administered to the same horse at a given treatment session are charged at 15 cents each.

There will also be a charge for the ranch call and for sedation, if needed.

Small Animal Shockwave Therapy

The cost for shockwave on small animals is $450 for the first site and $250 for each additional site treated at the same session.

  • Each shockwave treatment is customized to meet the unique needs of your animal. Dr. Johnson consults with your regular veterinarian after he or she has performed a thorough physical exam and completed any necessary diagnostics such as x-rays, ultrasound, bone scans, or MRI. Ensuring an accurate diagnosis is essential before beginning therapy.

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, Dr. Johnson formulates a tailored therapeutic plan. The optimal number and energy level of shockwaves are determined based on the specific injury or condition, and a treatment schedule is created.

This personalized approach ensures that your pet receives the most effective and appropriate care.

  • The cost for shockwave on small animals is $450 for the first site and $250 for each additional site treated at the same session. For example, shockwave of one hip would be $450 and shockwave of the other hip at the same session would be $250. Charges for sedation (if needed), exam, office visit or house call are additional.

Important Note About Comparing Prices for Shockwave Therapy

When comparing prices for shockwave therapy among veterinary practices, it's crucial to understand exactly what you're paying for. Many practices will quote you a price for "shockwave therapy," but to make an accurate comparison, you need to know how many impulses are included in that price. When comparing cost per impulse, you'll find that Oakhill is always competitively priced, often providing treatment at a lower per-impulse cost.

It's also important to understand the type of equipment being used. Not all shockwave machines are equal. Some devices marketed as "shockwave" machines actually generate radial waves rather than true shockwaves, sometimes referred to as "unfocused" shockwaves. These machines are cheaper to buy and operate, resulting in lower therapy costs. However, the physics and effects on the body are different, and the results are not comparable to those of true, focused shockwave therapy. Additionally, most insurance companies only cover true focused shockwave therapy.

Another crucial factor is the operator's expertise. Effective treatment requires an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology. If the shockwave probe is even slightly misaligned, the target can be missed. At Oakhill, all treatments are performed by Dr. Johnson, who specializes in shockwave therapy. She stays in close contact with shockwave researchers nationwide and continually expands her knowledge of shockwave therapy principles and applications.

Dr. Johnson is committed to providing the most appropriate treatment with the highest quality equipment, offering excellent value to horse owners.
